I'VE just read your article in last week’s Journal and am absolutely horrified and saddened by the prospect of Michaelmas House being allowed to be demolished.

Why didn’t this woman buy a modern house, if that’s what she wants?

Lower Lemington is a very special place – unspoilt and rare.

Michaelmas House in particular is in a very sensitive spot right next to a wonderful, unmodernised Norman Church.

I think it would be extremely difficult to come up with a modern building that would in any way be in sympathy with such a precious site.

My husband and I were the first people to view the house last year when it came on the market – but sadly were unable to put in an offer at that time.

It’s a lovely house, albeit with an ugly 1960s extension slapped on. But in a glorious position.

All ancient buildings need repair and sensitive restoration some time, and of course modern amenities – all of which I believe could be achieved.

This really is a tragedy if it is allowed to go through on the basis of being “energy efficient” – life and aesthetics aren’t all about that.

And as for “environmentally beneficial”... I’d laugh if I wasn’t so upset.
