With summer around the corner and outdoor hot tubs, lighting and bars emerging, electricity experts have warned homeowners to put safety first.

As people start getting their gardens summer ready, Paul Collins, technical director for leading electrical regulatory body, NICIEC, has given some tips to make sure your garden is safe this summer.

He recommends that decorative lights are brought inside unless waterproof, cables underground must be appropriately buried, and all outside sockets must be RCD protected.

For hot tubs, he strongly advises hiring a registered electrician due to the risk of mixing water and electricity.

Mr Collins also urges homeowners not to undertake the installation of outdoor electricals alone, but to consult registered contractors to ensure safety and requisite standards.
