MORETON in Marsh Cricket Club is consulting the public over plans to build a new pavilion aimed at supporting not only various sports clubs but the community as well.

According to the club the building has served its purpose and no longer fits the needs of the community.

Martin Jones, cricket club secretary said: "The current building was built in the 1960s and over the years it has served its purpose.

"Its perfectly serviceable at the moment and we have been making do over the last few years but it doesn't meet the needs of modern cricket.

"Its also become more and more of a community building as we have a large junior section and it hosts many parties as well as beerfest.

"Moreton is an expanding town and the building no longer meets its needs."

A local architect has drawn up plans for the new building but the club is now consulting the public to see what they would like to see.

Mr Jones continued: "We are consulting the public to see what people would like, where to put charging outlets, the size of the car park and any other facilities that are needed.

"The current building is only for sports but we want to build something that is for the community as well.

"At the moment the building is also used by the tennis club, juniors and the ladies croquet club as well as being hired out for various events.

"We want to make the new building a community asset and for it to be used 365 days a year."

The current pavilion has a wooden construction and was built in 1965.

The club will keep the old pavilion and plans to build the new one on the adjacent land.

Mr Jones said: " We want to futureproof for the next 50 years if not longer.

"We want to use it for not only sport but the community as well.

"We don't want it to compete with the Redesdale which is more for entertainment, we want something a bit more modern."

The club was founded in 1856 and is located on Batsford Road sports ground.
